If you're happy with a string of lights around the front door for a few weeks, a permanent system may be more than you need. The appeal is stronger if you want warm white lighting on an ordinary evening as well as colours for Halloween and Christmas.
What do permanent Christmas lights change?
Permanent eaves lighting stays fitted along the roofline throughout the year. You change the settings instead of replacing the strings for each occasion. It takes the annual setup and takedown off your list, although repairs or servicing may still be needed.
Picture how you'd use the lights on a Tuesday night in February. You might want a soft outline above the garage, a few points of light across the front, or nothing on at all. A system should suit those preferences just as well as a holiday display.
Before choosing, see the available white tones and brightness settings in a demonstration. Try the controls yourself, including any timer or scheduling features, and look at daylight photos of the track. That's how the installation will look for much of the day.
Which rooflines should permanent eaves lighting cover?
Start with the view from the street and the areas you spend time in. A front-only layout may be all you want. A corner lot, side entrance or backyard patio can give you a reason to extend it.
| Layout | A good starting point if | Details to settle |
|---|---|---|
| Front roofline | You mainly want lighting visible from the street | Whether the garage, upper roofline and peaks are included |
| Front plus a visible side | Your home is on a corner or has a side approach | Where the lights stop and how the corner looks |
| Wider coverage | You also want lights around a patio or other sides | Which additional sections you'll actually use |
At Green Origin, we use aluminium track with five LEDs per metre and colour-match the track to the eaves. The finish and mounting position are part of the layout discussion, so you know what to expect with the lights switched off.
A marked-up photo makes the proposed route much easier to understand. The width of the house alone won't tell you how much lighting is involved: the garage, peaks and upper rooflines can each add a separate section.
What should Calgary homeowners check for winter?
An outdoor lighting system needs more than a “weatherproof” label. Calgary's winter-storm guidance describes conditions that can bring cold, heavy snow, freezing rain and strong winds together. The equipment and its placement both deserve attention.
The manufacturer's specifications should cover the exact lights, power supply and controller in your quote. Go over these points with the installer:
- Suitability for each proposed location, including exposure to moisture.
- The operating temperature range for each component.
- Protection of connections and access to the controller for servicing.
- Canadian electrical certification markings on the equipment that requires certification.
For products that plug into an outlet, Health Canada advises looking for a recognised Canadian certification mark, such as CSA, cUL or cETL. The mark belongs on the product itself, not only on the box.
An IP rating describes protection against dust and water entering an enclosure. It doesn't tell you the operating temperature range. UL Solutions treats low-temperature testing separately from ingress protection, so an IP number alone isn't enough to judge winter suitability.
How do you compare quotes for permanent Christmas lights?
Put the proposed layouts side by side before comparing the totals. A lower price may cover only the garage, while another includes the upper peaks and a side wall. Neither figure means much until you know which sections it covers.
If you're quoted a price per foot, confirm what's included in it. The written quote should identify the route, track finish, lights, controller, power connection, installation and tax. Roof height, corners and access can also affect the work involved.
Then look at what happens if a light stops working. Who do you contact? Can that part be replaced, and what would a service visit involve? Green Origin offers a Lifetime Warranty. Read the written terms with your quote for the parts and labour coverage, conditions and any service charges.
Electricity use depends on the installed system and how you run it. A useful running-cost estimate needs the expected power draw, hours of use and your electricity rate. There's no single monthly cost that fits every house or lighting schedule.

Questions Calgary homeowners ask
How much do permanent Christmas lights cost in Calgary?
Green Origin's typical residential installations range from $1,199 to $4,000 CAD. The length of the roofline, its height and the number of peaks and corners affect the quote. Lighting the front only usually costs less than covering several sides. Send us photos of the areas you want lit for a free estimate.
Are permanent Christmas lights worth it?
They can be, especially if you want warm white lighting through the year or already pay someone to hang and remove holiday lights. You're paying for a fixed installation and the convenience of changing colours from your phone. If you only use a short string of lights in December, seasonal lights may suit your budget better.
Do permanent Christmas lights work in Calgary winters?
Yes, when the system is rated for the temperatures and exposure where it's installed. Check the cold-weather ratings for the LEDs, controller and power supply, not just whether the lights are labelled waterproof. The connections and mounting also need to suit an outdoor installation. Ask to see the specifications for the equipment in your quote.
Do permanent Christmas lights use a lot of electricity?
The cost depends on how many lights you have, their brightness, how long they're on and your electricity rate. A short front roofline on an evening timer will use less than a larger system left on all night at the same settings. Ask for an estimate based on your proposed layout and usual hours of use.
How long do permanent LED lights last?
There isn't one lifespan for every system. Check the manufacturer's rated life and whether individual lights, the controller and power supply can be replaced. A lifetime warranty doesn't mean every component lasts forever. Green Origin provides lifetime parts coverage, with parts and labour covered for the first five years. Labour charges may apply after that; check the written warranty terms with your quote.
How long does permanent lighting installation take?
Most homes take one day. Larger homes or more complex rooflines may take one to two days. The schedule depends on the layout, access and weather. We'll confirm the timing with you and show you how to use the app once the lights are installed.
